The East Rift Valley is a valley in eastern Taiwan. It is named after the two counties of Hualien and Taitung. It is also the essence of the two counties. Sometimes it is also called Dongtai Rift Valley because of its geographical location. It was also called Zhongxiandao Hirano or Zhongxian Road during the Japanese occupation. It is formed by the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate. It is sandwiched between the Central Mountain Range and the Coastal Mountains. It is about 180 kilometers long from north to south, 2 to 7 kilometers wide from east to west, and covers an area of about 1000 square kilometers. The altitude ranges from 50 to 250 meters. .
